Mohala Farms is a 6-acre certified organic farm located in Waialua on the North Shore of O'ahu. The farm was started in 2005 with a vision to support the local community in Hawaii through sustainable agriculture, lifelong education, and cultural creative arts.
Commercial sales began in 2009 and their produce is now sold regularly at the Waimea Valley Farmer's Market, at their own Farm Stand on Saturdays, through their CSA program, and to a number of stores, restaurants, and private caterers around the island. They provide educational tours to schools and community groups throughout the year and have trained nearly 200 full-time farm interns over the last 7 years.
Their organic practices include large-scale mulching, regular rotations of green manure crops, constant compost making and vermicast teas, and foliar spraying. They look to find what grows best in their particular place and climate in Waialua, and continually explore Pacific Island and semi-tropical food crops to add to their growing mix.
As a non-profit organization, they complement their work as farmers with a broader mission of having the farm be a place of learning, inspiration, renewal, advocacy and community service.Their work is grounded on the life-giving qualities of the land and a village-model of mutual cooperation and local self-sufficiency.
Sustainable agriculture also focuses on the triple bottom line – on the social, environmental and the financial. Their goal is to meet all three of these components. This involves the farm contributing to a thriving local economy, increasing the health and vitality of the land, and becoming financially self-sustaining while providing their workers with a fulfilling livelihood and a living wage.
