IDEC Farms
IDEC Corporation is a globally recognized factory automation company that specializes in PLC, HMI, Relays, Sensors, and other automation and safety related products. Based out of Japan, IDEC has expanded its sectors to new opportunities in agriculture, operating 2 successful greenhouses in Japan. In order to further build off of Japan's success, IDEC Corporation has assigned IDEC Environmental Solutions LLC to build and operate a tomato greenhouse in Waimanalo to help tackle Hawaii's self-sufficiency problem, while also inspiring local farmers and youth that growing tasty organic produce is possible through the usage of greenhouses and innovative technology.
IDEC’s tomato greenhouse in Waimanalo is managed by Keoni Valencia, Lei Hanawahine, and Leslie Hanawahine. Keoni, Lei, and Leslie have experience in the farming industry having previously worked for Nalo Farms until their closure. When Nalo Farms closed, IDEC was glad to hire people with lots of experience working and farming in Waimanalo, to manage their farm. IDEC’s greenhouses are actually located on the same property that Nalo Farms used to be on.
Their tomatoes are only fed with organic nutrients that are extracted from everyday herbs and roots. They try to input as much as 80% of what they put into their plants from locally sourced products on Oahu.
As of June 2019, they are officially organically certified. They are also GAP (Good Agricultural Services) certified as of December 2019. This means that their farmers at the greenhouse passed an audit by a USDA auditor who inspected very minute details about their operation. By receiving this certification, it deems them a food-safe operation that has minimal risk when it comes to food borne related diseases or illnesses.
