• Kunia Country Farm
  • Kunia Country Farms began operations in 2010 and is now one of the largest aquaponic farms and producers of leafy greens in the state of Hawaii. They strive to deliver only the highest quality produce to supermarkets, restaurants, and local consumers. Harvests are done early in the morning twice a week to ensure freshness, with harvested produce refrigerated within 15 minutes of the stem cut. Kunia Country Farms is food safety certified by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

Kunia Country Farms operates a deep water culture (DWC) or raft aquaponic system. The farm currently has 20 grow bed troughs built on a 1-acre field. Each trough measures 96 feet long by 8 feet wide, providing a total growing area of 768 square feet per trough and 13,800 square feet for the entire system. Although the term "deep water" might be misleading, each trough contains only 10-12 inches of water, which is sufficient for the root systems of plants like lettuce. Each trough can grow from 1,650 to 3,300 plants, depending on the optimal spacing for specific varieties.

Essentially, it is a giant recirculating fish tank, with filtered water diverted to growing troughs before returning to the fish. The Tilapia provide nutrient-rich water to the plants in the troughs, and the plants act as an additional biological filter, returning clean water to the fish. When the system is balanced, both the fish and the plants benefit from this relationship. The only necessary inputs for the system are fish feed, plant seeds, and occasional supplements of iron, calcium, and potassium.
