ʻĀina Ho'okupu O Kīlauea
In 2015, ʻĀina Ho'okupu O Kīlauea (AHK) became an official 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with the dedicated goal of being able to facilitate solutions to economic, social, and agricultural/food security challenges that the greater Kīlauea community of Kaua‘i faces. The first and perhaps most daring undertaking was accepting stewardship of a 75-acre parcel from the County of Kaua‘i, formerly owned by the Kīlauea Sugar Plantation Co. This flagship project was celebrated as the successful culmination of a 30-year preservation battle by the community, to prevent further development of gentleman’s estates, such as the elite Seacliff Plantation gated community that lies on the makai side of the parcel. The 75-acre parcel was originally called the Kīlauea Agricultural Park but was changed to Kīlauea Community Agricultural Center (KCAC) in 2016 to honor and commemorate the never-failing determination by the Kīlauea community to protect this important historical open space.
The Kīlauea Community Agricultural Center works to contribute to island food security and to a healthy, stable, and balanced local agricultural economy by:
- Providing valuable productive agricultural land at low or no cost to farmers
- Providing low or no-cost community garden plots
- Operating Kīlauea Community Farm, producing produce at low or no cost to community members in need
- Providing a stable, safe, and permanent farmers' market facility for ongoing direct-to-consumer produce market development.
