Hawaii Farming stands as a prominent greenhouse farming venture situated amidst the picturesque green hills of Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. With a workforce of over 70 dedicated full-time employees, they proudly operate as one of Hawaii's largest fresh produce farms. Their focus lies in cultivating food safety-certified vegetables, which are widely distributed to wholesalers, retailers, and consumers across the State of Hawaii. Spanning 12 acres, their state-of-the-art greenhouses are dedicated to the production of specialty cucumbers, including our renowned brand, Keiki Cukes - Mini Cucumbers.
Hawaii Farming wholeheartedly embraces sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices. Cucumbers are nurtured hydroponically within controlled environments, benefiting from centralized fertigation and crop monitoring. In their commitment to environmental stewardship, they repurpose all green waste into compost and employ techniques that require 90% less water than traditional field-grown crops, effectively conserving precious natural resources. Moreover, they prioritize herbicide-free cultivation, while the controlled environment approach significantly reduces the need for pesticides and fungicides, minimizing the risks associated with pest-related diseases such as rat lungworm.
Ensuring the utmost standards of food safety, they have obtained certifications under the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) and FSMA (Federal Food Safety Modernization Act) guidelines. Their farming operations undergo independent annual audits conducted by Primus Auditing Ops in Indoor Agriculture, Harvest, and Packinghouse, incorporating HACCP audit modules that comply with rigorous agricultural practice requirements. Additionally, they subject themselves to thorough inspections by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, adhering to the FDA Produce Safety Rules.
While they may not currently hold USDA organic certification, mainly due to the unavailability of fully water-soluble natural fertilizers specifically designed for large-scale hydroponic soilless cultivation, they actively employ organic inputs whenever feasible, highlighting their ongoing commitment to sustainable farming practices.
