Special East African bananas with an aromatic, fruity flavor and subtle tartness that finishes like a pineapple. Often ripens somewhat green; when it peels easy it's ready to eat!

This special banana is East African in origin where it is known variously as ‘Mchare’, ‘Muraru’, ‘Huti’ or ‘Mlali’, but we thought ‘Pineapple Banana’ might be easier to relate to. The ripe fruit has a thick and smooth texture with an aromatic, fruity flavor and subtle yet distinct tartness. Curiously, it is an ancestral parent to Cavendish, Gros Michel and Apple bananas which are some of the most popular bananas the world over, and the flavor and texture combines the best of all three.

Don’t judge a banana by it’s peel! The one thing to be aware of is that it will often ripen somewhat green, so check for aroma, softness and peelability to know when they are ready.

Gabriel grew up in the mountains of Colorado where he began studying bananas at the age of 14. Continuing his informal studies throughout high school, he moved to Hawaiʻi in 2007 to attend the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where he earned his BS in Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences in 2011, and his MS in 2015. During his time at the university, he helped to start and eventually run the Student Organic Farm Training (SOFT) program for 5 years where he gained hands-on experience in growing and marketing a wide variety of crops.
