According to Maui Breadfruit Company founder John Cadman's telling, he has long been a healthy eater, but he always craved something sweet at the end of the day. In an attempt to satisfy this craving more healthfully, he began experimenting with raw and vegan desserts utilizing local ingredients.

After much research, John realized that breadfruit (ʻulu) embodies sustainability and food security more than any other food crop in Hawaiʻi...and that it is an incredibly tasty sweet ingredient. The result of all this trial and error: delectable Pono Pies! John also uses breadfruit to create a savory line of ʻulu hummus in regular and Hawaiian chili flavors.
